Before I start I must admit, I don’t have all the answers. I’ll never have all the answers, and that is something I’m still learning to accept. Ideally, all of the things we’re fighting for are reasonable. Universal healthcare, wealth distribution, decriminalization of marijuana, and the list goes on and on. Honoring black trans women’s lives, respecting Black women, and creating a world where black kids are allowed to feel free, you would think these are things wouldn’t have to beg for, but it is.
The media is feeding us police brutality as the greatest injustice in the Black community and It’s really just the tip of the iceberg. We’re facing mass incarceration, a wealth gap that’s increasing by the day, environmental racism, capitalism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny and this is still just the tip of the iceberg of the problems plaguing our communities like a disease. With all of these things killing our people by the day we don’t need grand gestures of “support” from liberals, or from the NBA for that matter.
Everything about what they’re doing has honestly made me sick. Everything the NBA has done so far has been performative and I’m tired of seeing so many performances. I don’t want to see “Black Lives Matter” on the court, I want to see the NBA donate some of the billions of dollars they generate and put that money directly into the pockets of poor Black people who live in the hoods of the cities their teams play in.
I don’t want to see two teams taking a knee before tip-off, I want the league to remove the National Anthem from playing in arenas forever if they’re really about protest. You have “education reform” on the back of jerseys’ but you’re not donating money to poor black and brown schools in cities where the police department is more funded than the schools. Shit is a joke.
Although i believe all of them could redistribute their wealth a lot more, my grief isn’t with the players right now, it’s with the owners, the NBA, and the people who run the NBA. Right now they’re just representing everything wrong with performative liberalism. It’s all about not appearing to be on the wrong side of history, without doing any real work to just be on the right side.
If the NBA really wants to make a statement, they’ll postpone the season, donate their billions and pour it into paying off non-violent offenders books, pay rent for random poor Black and brown people, and stop gentrifying the hood with their billion dollar arenas displacing millions of Black people who once called those hoods home.
The time for performative activism is over, people are dying. And the longer we allow these people to perform, the more blood will be on their hands.
