The Black Mamba’s Getting His Jersey Number (Numbers) Retired


The Los Angeles Lakers will retire both the number 8 and 24 jersey’s worn by the great Kobe Bryant throughout his illustrious 20 year career. The retirement ceremony is set to be held December 18th when the Lakers host their in state rivals the Golden State Warriors. The Black Mamba wore number 8 from 1996 through 2005-2006 season until he eventually made the switch to number 24.

During Kobe’s time wearing number 8 he played in 707 games, averaged 23.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. He helped guide the Lakers to three straight NBA finals wins whilst also garnering 8 all star appearances, a scoring title, and one groovy afro.

Bean was arguably greater in his double digits jersey than he was in his single digit one. During his time with 2-4 on his shirt, as Lil wayne would call it, Kobe averaged 26.3 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game, and 4.9 assists per game.

The Black Mamba was also awarded league MVP honors and LED (Led as in not being a sidekick) the Lakers to two championships in which he won Finals MVP both times. He also made nine all star games and had maybe his most memorable performance ever when he dropped 60 points on the Utah Jazz in last career game ever.
