On Friday, we marked a year since the death of multi-talented icon Prince. Prince was known for his androgynous and flamboyant appearances. His style was like no other – even straight men acknowledged how pretty he was. Although he didn’t fit the normal description of a male singer, he definitely held his ground in terms of success and longevity. In honor of Prince’s death, it’s only right we share Prince’s top five best songs.
How could you make a top five songs by Prince and not have “Kiss” included? This song reentered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 28 and within the next week moved 5 places up to number 23 when Prince passed away last year. The song has since went on to sell over a million copies more in the United States. This is one of those tracks you always hear on the radio when they’re playing old Prince songs. It’s a classic that just can’t be looked over – definitely a banger.
#4. I Wanna Be Your Lover
This song was off of Prince’s sophomore self-titled album, which had an incredible amount of success. The song shot to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Prince a platinum plaque. It was his first successful song in the U.S. One of his great uptempo hits with a nice catchy hook. There’s no way you could not know the lyrics to the chorus, because he says the same thing over and over again, and it sticks. Another one of Prince’s classics, for sure.
#3. When Doves Cry
Album: Purple Rain (Soundtrack)
One of the most melodic tracks of Prince’s career – the lyrics alone just takes you on a journey of nostalgia. “How can you just leave me standing alone in a world that’s so cold? Maybe I’m just too demanding, maybe I’m just like my father: too bold. Maybe you’re just like my mother, she’s never satisfied, why do we scream at each other? This is what it sounds like when doves cry.” Definitely a song that will put you in a trance of pure emotions and thoughts.
#2. Diamond and Pearls
Album: Diamonds and Pearls
A beautiful ballad from his 13th studio album. Unlike an average ballad, this song has a little bit of a rock and roll sound with heavy drumming and guitar strumming throughout the background. In this particular song Prince explains to the woman of his life, if he had it, he would give her anything in the world she could ask for, but the only problem is, he can’t. All he has to give in return is his love, and he just hopes that’s enough. One of his most beautiful tunes.
#1. Purple Rain
Album: Purple Rain (Soundtrack)
If there was any song that gained Prince any ounce of notoriety in his career, it was this one. The movie alone was a major success and the album went on to be 13x platinum making it certified Diamond by the RIAA. The album has since went on to sell 22 million copies. In this song Prince talks about how he never meant to hurt the woman of his life, he just wanted to see her full with joy and spiritual fulfillment. This song stands the test of time – there’s no doubt if you asked your mom or dad what their favorite Prince songs are, this song would make the top of their list.
Prince’s music was like no other. Again, his style wasn’t comparable to another. He was truly a trendsetter and did what was best for him, no matter what others may have thought. He was a great role model and encouraging leader. He was an icon, he was a legend, he is Prince.
