FOREST PARK, Ga — The person responsible for 13 year old Malachi Hemphill’s death has been arrested.
On Monday April 10, Malachi was operating a gun while recording himself on Instagram Live, for his friends to see. Unfortunately, the firearm went off and he accidentally shot himself. His Mother Shaniqua Stephens, told Atlanta’s NBC, she and her daughter were downstairs when they heard a loud noise coming from her son’s room. They immediately ran upstairs, kicked the door down, and that’s when they discovered him laying in a pool of his own blood.
“My daughter screamed and said, ‘Mom, turn his phone off,'” said Stephens. That’s how she found out he was on Instagram Live, recording that moment. Hemphill was rushed to the hospital, where he later on died. The incident came about when a friend watching the live stream asked him why he didn’t have a clip in the gun and told him to put one in. Hemphill then proceeded to put the clip in the gun, and from there he accidentally shot himself.
For a while it wasn’t clear where he actually got the gun, until Monday April 17, an investigation uncovered that it was another juvenile who gave it to him. That juvenile has then been charged with more than one offence. The mother of the victim is saddened that another child is the cause of her son’s death.
