Black History Month is a big deal to those who are a part of the African American community. African Americans are a prominent part of popular culture today. Everyday this month, the Jetlag team will present a fun fact about Black History Month.
Black History Month originated as “Negro History Week,” a term coined by Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Mr. Woodson was a noted African American Scholar, historian, publisher, and educator.
It wasn’t until 1976, that “Negro History Week” became month long in February. February was chosen as the month to celebrate to correspond to the birthdays of Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.
